Vista DHCP bug - WiFi connect failed

Vista refuses to connect to certain wifi routers. I worked around the wide spread issue by forcing a static IP to the client. Is this the proper solution? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 I guess we will never know. Thankfully the now vintage laptop is well supported by Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, so the problem is solved for good.

Unity 2D segfault in Precise

Unity is full of bugs.We all know it. Usually the window manager fails and decorations are gone. Sometimes all windows are stacked on top of each other at a corner. It's so bad that I had to write a script for killing and restarting the effected processes easily from a shell to resume working. All of this usually occurs when doing twisted deeds like opening a web page, however it can sometimes be triggered by toggling fullscreen or starting an application. It is always unexpected and unpredictable. If you know what to do, you don't loose any work and you don't even need to close any windows. So it's only a cosmetic issue at this level, but still not very professional. Interestingly, I have encountered this mostly in 2012-2014, and they have much reduced the occurrence rate from about 2015. Nonetheless, I don't use Unity on any of my new installs since about 2013 because of this. If you are fortunate enough to never have used this wonderful peace of engineering, ...

Xperia on certain wifi routers connection problem

Image
Works perfectly with two smarter routers using default settings, but does the well known Android Ice Cream Sandwich dance on a legacy one. It sometimes connects on first attempt, other times after a dozen loops, in the rest of the cases not at all. A loop consists of saved, connecting, authenticating, obtaining IP and scanning. The signal strength goes very low in the authenticating and obtaining IP phases. It spends most of the time displaying obtaining IP address, which takes a few seconds. Lowering the beacon interval does help a bit. Altering channel selection, RTS, TKIP, MAC filtering, preamble type, IAPP, data rate or G-only vs. B/G doesn't make much of a difference. A timing issue related bug in the wireless driver is probable, as loading the router CPU sometimes helps. The router log is filled with the following actions 3 second apart: "syslog: wlan0: WPA2-AES PSK authentication in progress.." Sprinkled with authentication failed and "udhcpd Received a ...

Can't open Google Docs Template Gallery

I've been hit by a nasty bug just as I'm planning to use Docs Templates. You will be greeted with the following error if you visit the Google Docs Template Gallery : "Sorry, an error has occurred. Please try your request again." It seems that they have been working on the issue for almost a month now: Google Product Forums › Google Docs › Templates A workaround for now is to visit a filtered view and then navigate using the types and categories on the left: Google Spreadsheets templates Neither the Docs, nor the Presentations type works for me, however any kind of document can be returned if you narrow by category instead and prune the type=... part from the resulting URL. You can also do the same trick with the search box.

Trickling of bug fixes

I've been bitten by the following bug from 2009 which has a proper fix in git, yet the stable package doesn't even have a workaround for it. That's agility for you! http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhelds.ipaq.synce.devel/1808 And let's not talk about the memory safety issues this bug again brings up.

New achievement: Ubuntu enablement successful

Actually it is not an option for Ivy Bridge, it is a must! In my opinion, a patch would have been in order to the LTS kernel. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack Some background: linuxquestions.org: [SOLVED] kernel 3.2.x causes system freeze on Intel Ivy Bridge platform(e.g. ThinkPad T430)? Shift key often gets stuck on Ubuntu 10.04

The problem is triggered by me rapidly changing capitalization via shift while typing. I use the two shift keys symmetrically, but it always seems to involve the left shift. It lasts from about 10 to 30 seconds on average, but today it ceased to resolve by itself. So I started to research the issue (IN CAPS), and thankfully found something that seemed to work: CTRL+FN-F1 to switch to a console, then back to Xorg with CTRL+FN-F7, and pressing the left shift right away. Maybe it is indeed related to TVTime usage, I need to concentrate more on the issue. It is said to be caused by automatic periodical screen saver inhibition via stuffing control and shift keypresses using XTest. Ubuntu Bug #588473: shift key get stuck randomly

BUG: has even more options than ls

This seems to be some kind of an easter egg in man pages. Exuberant Ctags bug at SourceForge: ctags doesn't have more options than ls - ID: 2707519 (- after all) wodim man page (formerly cdrecord) - see the top of the BUGS section
